Today's Q was more about awareness than a physical test. We came together to put a spotlight on something many men, including some in our own group, battle with every day of their lives. We can't hide this in a corner and insist men are strong enough to get through it on their own. Leaving the 6 behind isn't in our DNA, but in the mental health battle, it becomes infinitely more important that we shieldlock our brothers and not only stand beside them, but ensure we carry them through at times. The darkness many face is too much to battle alone....today we're going to talk about it. Because the cost of ignoring it is too high.
Warm-O-Rama:
SSHs, WMHs, Good Mornings, Slow ass merkins. Somewhere in here YHC had to relocate from the garage to the back porch as my internet connection was failing me! Nonetheless, QiC broke it down accordingly; Today's workout is going to include some really random sounding numbers and sets. However, pay attention because every single number means something.
Round 1:
9 – burpees
33 - squats
25 – Big Boy (WW2) Situps
65 – Flutter kicks
Rinse and Repeat
Why?
9% of men in the United States have daily feelings of depression or anxiety.
33% of those men mentioned above take medication because of those feelings.
Only 25% of those men actually spoke to a mental health professional in regard to their feelings.
White men aged 65 and above have the highest rate of suicide in the United States.
Round 2:
17 - jumping Knee tucks
43 – American hammers
25 – Merkins
20 – burpees
Rinse and Repeat for 3 total sets of Round 2.
Why?
17% have a common mental disorder, e.g. depression, anxiety, phobias, etc.
43% of adults believe they have had a mental disorder at some point in life.
25% of people with eating disorders are men.
20% of people will have a diagnosable mental health condition in any given year.
We did this round 3 times because men are 3 times more likely than women to commit suicide.
Round 3:
20 - Diamond merkins
75 - LBCs
32 - Jump Squat
36 - Burpees
Rinsed and Repeated
Why?
20 Veterans commit suicide daily
75% of deaths by suicide are male
32% of Americans have anxiety disorders
36% of all psychological referrals are for men.
Some final stats to consider: In the US, 7% of adults have major depression, 17% have depression, 13% of youths aged 12-17 have major depression which equals 3.1 million. 6% of people have PTSD or 12 million.
Moleskin:
The battle many face in our own lives is a dark and horrid experience. Every single one of us knows, or has experienced, some degree of impact from mental health issues. It can overcome even the strongest of us. Don't neglect to talk about it, don't be hesitant to reach out, don't think you are too strong to ask for help. The cost of losing the battle is too high to battle it alone. Surround yourself with people who are willing to hold the line beside you, willing to stand in the way and carry you when needed. Mental illness doesn't have a name tag identifying it, and society has stigmatized it to a point many are unwilling to ask for help or talk about it. Don't be that guy, don't hide in the darkness with your own thoughts and anxieties. Show your true strength and let others pull you out of your anxiety, addiction, depression or mental battle. Men, as I shared this morning, I have dwelled in the darkest hole you can imagine and I mean it when I say reach out to me 24/7 when it attacks you as well. I shared some of my story and I am grateful for others who did as well. Those won't make this BB, but I am grateful for those who shared. What we have in F3 matters...but only if we're willing to hold ourselves accountable for our brother's needs. If we fail at that, then we've failed at everything. For today and forever.... No on your own #NoOYO
